In Memoriam (2023)
Every spring, the new figures are released; in 2022, there were 1,569 individuals who ended their own lives. The day the statistics reach the artist, she is sitting on a quiet beach overlooking the Jämtland mountain range. She try to relate the number to volume – to bodies, but it remains abstract:
"It might have been the contrast of nature's serenity and the overwhelming information that made this piece emerge. As I tried to visualise lining up that number of bodies, a physical discomfort arose. They would stretch along the beach I sit on, continuing far beyond the curve ahead. I break down the number — twelve months, which averages out to over one hundred and thirty people per month, and over four people per day. It becomes more tangible, but one thousand five hundred and sixty-nine individuals… I still cannot see it in front of me."
For the rest of the summer, Nilsson collected stones along the same beach where she had sat that day. At the end of September, during Suicide Awareness Month, she placed the 1,569 stones on twelve fallen tree trunks in a forest clearing just above the beach, with the intention of materialising and grasping the quantity, and honouring those who no longer endured or desired to live.
The performance and land art installation In Memoriam (2023) serves as a poignant reflection on the number of lives lost to suicide. The artist's journey along the shoreline becomes a ritual of remembrance; each stone becomes a silent witness, a physical embodiment of individual stories otherwise reduced to statistics.
The chosen setting, a nature reserve near Östersund, creates a dialogue between the tranquillity of nature and the weight of human suffering. The installation spreads over a substantial area (approximately 50 x 40 metres) and invites visitors into a meditative space where they can contemplate mortality and memory.
In Memoriam (2023) was the starting point for a recurring work, in which the artist annually examines the statistics from the previous year to create a new piece. Over time, it has become clear that the work unfolds just as much in the encounter with the viewer. As much as it is about raising awareness around suicide and fostering empathy and understanding, it is equally about bearing witness: meeting and holding the emotions and experiences people carry with them.
The performance lasted for about 4 hours.

Varje vår släpps de nya siffrorna, 2022 var det 1569 personer som själva avslutade sina liv. Dagen statistiken når konstnären sitter hon på en strand med utsikt över Jämtlands fjällkedja. Hon försökte sätta siffran i relation till volym –till kropp, men den förblir abstrakt:
“Det kan ha varit kontrasten mellan det natursköna lugnet och de överväldigande siffrorna som gjorde att detta verk tog form. Jag försökte visualisera tanken på att rada upp den mängden kroppar, ett fysiskt obehag steg. De skulle tillsammans sträcka sig längs med stranden jag sitter på, och troligtvis fortsätta långt bortom kröken längre fram. Jag bryter ned siffran – tolv månader, det blir i genomsnitt drygt hundratrettio personer per månad, och drygt fyra personer per dag. Det är mer greppbart, men ettusen femhundrasextionio personer. Jag kan fortfarande inte se det framför mig.”
Resten av sommaren samlar Nilsson stenar längs med samma strand hon satt på den dagen. I slutet av september, under Suicide Awareness Month, placerade hon ut stenarna på tolv fallna trädstammar i en glänta i skogen som ligger strax ovanför stranden, med en ambition att försöka materialisera och få grepp om mängden samt för att hedra minne av de som inte längre orkade eller ville leva.
In Memoriam (2023) är ett performance och en landart-installation som fungerar som en gripande reflektion över det antal liv som gått förlorade i suicid. Konstnärens vandring längs strandkanten blir en minnesritual; varje sten blir ett tyst vittne, en fysisk gestaltning av individuella berättelser som annars reducerats till statistik.
Den valda platsen, ett naturreservat nära Östersund, skapar en kontrast mellan naturens stillhet och tyngden av mänskligt lidande. Installationen breder ut sig över en betydande yta (cirka 50 x 40 meter) och bjuder in besökare till ett meditativt rum där de kan begrunda dödlighet och minne.
In Memoriam (2023) blev startpunkten för ett återkommande verk, där konstnären årligen undersöker föregående års statistik för att skapa ett nytt verk. Med tiden har det blivit tydligt att verket lika mycket sker i mötet med betraktaren. Lika mycket som det handlar om att öka medvetenheten kring suicid och främja empati och förståelse, handlar det också om att vara ett vittne: att möta och hålla de känslor och erfarenheter människor bär med sig.
Performance pågick i drygt fyra timmar.
